A Gothic Book Launch at Hollywood Forever Cemetery

There could hardly be a more fitting place to celebrate the finale of a dark fantasy trilogy than Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

As a Hollywood Forever Cemetery photographer, our team had the chance to capture the launch party for Leigh Bardugo’s Dead Beat, hosted in partnership with Flatiron Books at the cemetery’s historic Masonic Lodge.

Founded in 1899, Hollywood Forever is both one of Los Angeles’ most iconic cemeteries and a unique cultural destination. Its Masonic Lodge, which opened in 1927, now hosts everything from concerts and screenings to literary events and private gatherings.

Celebrating the Final Ninth House Book

Dead Beat is the third and final installment of Bardugo’s Ninth House trilogy, and fans were more than ready to find out how the story ends.

Influencers, BookTok creators, and longtime readers filled the Masonic Lodge for a candlelit, gothic-inspired evening that felt perfectly suited to the world of the series.

Guests enjoyed food and drinks before Leigh took the stage for a brief speech. She then stayed to sign books, meet readers, and take photos with attendees.

Tarot, Aura Readings, and Plenty to Explore

They designed the evening to be interactive, with plenty for guests to experience between conversations and book signings.

A tarot card reader, aura reader, and palm reader were stationed throughout the event, giving guests the chance to lean fully into the mystical, gothic atmosphere. The activations kept the room buzzing and gave attendees something fun and unexpected to experience throughout the night.

It was the kind of event where guests weren’t simply watching something happen — they were part of it.

No Peeking!

But the best surprise came at the end of the night.

Each guest left carrying a locked case containing a copy of Dead Beat. The catch? No one could open it yet. Guests had to wait until the official release date. Then, they would receive a three-digit code unlocking the case. They would then finally get their hands on the conclusion they had been waiting for.

Such a clever way to build anticipation around a book launch! It gave guests an experience they would keep talking about after the party ended.
