I had so much fun capturing this Tustin Grand Opening photography event with the Boys and Girls Club of America and SenderOne Climbing! Professional rock climber, Kevin Jorgeson, made a generous donation to the Tustin Chapter of BGCA. He gifted this brand new climbing wall feature on behalf of his organization, 1Climb. Jorgeson and 1Climb’s mission is to introduce 100,000 kids to climbing. As a professional climber, Jorgeson understands the power the sport has to influence young lives. Climbing as a sport also introduces healthy habits and a strong mindset to set kids up for success.
Kevin Jorgeson is best known for completing a free climb of the Dawn Wall with Tommy Caldwell. The Dawn Wall is one of the most difficult routes in the world. It’s located on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. It’s so difficult that Jorgeson and Caldwell’s feat was featured in a popular documentary by the same name: The Dawn Wall.
It was a huge deal for the Boys and Girls Club of Tustin to have such an inspirational figure come out to introduce kids to the world of climbing. The kids were excited to meet Jorgeson and sat in anticipation for him to arrive! Kevin started by giving a short talk about climbing to the kids. Afterwards, the city of Tustin and The BCGA awarded Jorgeson with an award. And then it was time for the ribbon cutting!
Afterwards: the moment everyone had been waiting for! Jorgeson and staff from local gym, SenderOne, helped the kids into the climbing gear 1Climb had donated. There were brand new climbing shoes, harnesses, ropes, and all of the safety equipment needed.
After the kids learned how to safely tie in, it was time to climb! The kids eagerly gathered in a line for their turn on the wall. It was so much fun watching them enjoy this new experience! Many of the kids were surprised by how difficult it actually was! Climbing is a physical and mental challenge for people of all ages. Kids ranging from elementary school to middle school laughed and cheered each other on as they enjoyed this new activity! It was great watching everyone move their body, try new challenges, and have fun at the same time!
