I love capturing Annenberg Beach House photography because of the beautiful views and beach accessibility. This summer, NephCure hosted their annual LA Walk + Patient Day fundraiser at this venue. NephCure is a nonprofit organization that provides resources for people and families struggling with rare kidney disorders. This fundraiser brought patients and their families together for education, family-friendly activities, and a walk to raise awareness for the disorders they struggle to fight.
Although it is obviously a very difficult struggle that families must face, it was amazing to see how much joy the tight-knit community shared. There is a special bond that forms from finding people who struggle with your very rare disorder. People traveled far and wide to join their community for the event. Patients of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles united in their fight and shared their experiences.
Rare diseases don’t only affect the patient; they affect the entire family. The day was planned with all age ranges in mind. There were many small children present, both as patients and supporters. Kids played games with their families and new friends. I loved seeing alll of the laughter and joy being shared!
Annenberg Community Beach sits right on the water. Guests gathered together for a quick speech celebrating all of NephCure’s wonderful accomplishments through the year. Then it was time for a quick group stretch, and the walk commenced! The group took over the beachfront for a quick lap. The big group definitely drew attention from the local joggers and rollerbladers!
After the walk, kids got to create some beautiful artwork at the arts and crafts station. I loved seeing their creativity come to life! The adults connected in the expo hall to discuss different organizations and resources partnering with NephCure.
Now for the main event! The adults headed into a panel discussion about topics ranging from new research to patient resources to families giving accounts of how their children coped with doctor visits and leading a normal life. It was beautiful to hear just how much care loved ones put into making this as smooth of an experience as they could.
Meanwhile, the kids participated in “kidney olympics” outside. The competition included a variety of contests, from most pushups completed to longest plank hold. I was so impressed by the strength of these kids! They really got competitive and (most importantly) everyone had fun.
