If you’re ever uncertain about how to bring together a group of Chicagoans: offer sports and beer. I had the opportunity to capture Loyola University Chicago alumni event photography at First Draft in DTLA. The event brought together alumni spanning 5 decades who have since relocated to Los Angeles. As a LUC alumni myself, it was interesting to see how large a community has migrated west for various reasons.
Alumni of all ages came together to attend the Chicago Blackhawks vs. Los Angeles Kings hockey game at Crypto Arena. Prior to the game, First Draft hosted the group for some food and beverages and networking opportunities. First Draft Taproom & Kitchen is nestled in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, and offers both indoor and outdoor seating.
It was interesting to compare experiences with alumni from different chapters. While many of the campus’ buildings and offerings had changed, the overall experience was the same. Particularly, going to school in an urban setting such as Chicago presents the same challenges and opportunities no matter the decade.
In a city as large as Los Angeles, it’s rare to stumble into a community that shares a similar background. It was fun to overhear snippets of conversation mentioning places I used to frequent and had since forgotten.
If there was any question: this is a very Chicago photo. Please note the slice of pizza is NOT deep dish, however.
One thing we could all agree on: the weather is MUCH preferable in LA. No more -20 degree winters for us!
