Earlier this month, I had the privilege of documenting a powerful and emotional event in San Bernardino—a graduation ceremony for the Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program (FFRP), held at the Dorothy Inghram Learning Center. As a nonprofit event photographer in LA, I’ve captured many meaningful moments, but this one was truly special.
FFRP is the brainchild of Royal Ramey, a former incarcerated firefighter who has turned his lived experience into a mission-driven nonprofit. The organization supports formerly incarcerated individuals who fought fires while serving time, helping them build careers in wildfire prevention and emergency services after release.
With California wildfires becoming more intense each year, the role of incarcerated firefighters has finally started gaining the attention—and gratitude—it deserves. These individuals risk their lives doing dangerous, backbreaking labor for minimal pay, all in service to keeping others safe. FFRP is working to ensure that this labor leads to long-term, meaningful opportunities.
The graduation ceremony was heartfelt and full of love. Friends, family members, and mentors gathered to celebrate the latest group of graduates who completed the FFRP program. Some came bearing flowers, others brought cards and balloons, and all brought their full hearts to the room.
One of the most moving parts of the day was seeing past graduates return to cheer on the new cohort. It spoke volumes about the strength and closeness of this community. These aren’t just peers—they’re chosen family, bonded by shared experiences and a common purpose.
From emotional hugs to proud smiles, every corner of the room held a story worth telling. The energy was filled with pride, support, and the promise of new beginnings. These moments are exactly why I love what I do.
As a nonprofit event photographer in LA, I aim to tell stories that matter—stories of resilience, hope, and transformation. The FFRP graduation was all of that and more.
If your organization is planning an event that brings people together around a meaningful mission, I’d love to help you capture it. Let’s connect.
